As an international school, AISCT believes that learning another language is an important part of preparing students to engage confidently with the world.
AISCT offers聽French and Spanish from Grade 1 through High School, providing students with a coherent pathway from their first exposure to another language through advanced study and Advanced Placement (AP).
Our World Language Program emphasizes meaningful communication, cultural understanding, and the progressive development of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills.
A Proficiency-Based Approach
Language learning does not progress at the same pace for every student. Some students arrive at AISCT as complete beginners, others have studied French or Spanish previously, and some are already highly proficient or native speakers.
For this reason, AISCT’s World Language Program is designed around聽student proficiency rather than simply age or grade level.
As students progress into Upper School, placement is increasingly determined by demonstrated language proficiency. Students studying at the same level therefore work toward common learning outcomes and expectations, regardless of their grade.
This approach provides greater flexibility for both advanced learners and students beginning a new language later in their school journey.
Building the Foundation in Elementary School
French and Spanish instruction begins in聽Grade 1, introducing students to language learning through age-appropriate communication, vocabulary, culture, and language structures.
As students progress through Elementary School, the program becomes increasingly intentional in preparing them for advanced language study.
Beginning in Grade 4, students enter the first semester of the formal Beginners curriculum, followed by the second semester in Grade 5. At the end of Grade 5, student proficiency is assessed to determine the most appropriate next step.
Students demonstrating the required proficiency may advance directly to聽French or Spanish II, while students who would benefit from additional foundational study enter聽French or Spanish I.
Native and highly proficient French and Spanish speakers can also be appropriately placed and challenged within the program.
Multiple Entry Points
AISCT is a highly international and mobile community, and our World Language Program is designed with that reality in mind.
Students joining AISCT with聽no previous French or Spanish experience聽can enter the Beginners pathway at an appropriate point, including in Upper School.
Students arriving with previous language experience are assessed and placed according to their proficiency rather than automatically being placed according to age or grade.
Similarly, native speakers and students with advanced proficiency can be placed into courses that provide an appropriate level of challenge.
This flexibility means that a student’s previous educational experience does not need to determine how far they can progress at AISCT.
A Pathway to Advanced Placement
One of the central goals of the AISCT World Language Program is to provide students with a clear pathway toward our highest-level language courses:聽AP French Language and Culture and AP Spanish Language and Culture.
These university-level courses allow students to demonstrate advanced language proficiency while developing sophisticated communication and intercultural skills.
As part of AISCT’s broader Advanced Placement program, AP French and AP Spanish also provide students with internationally recognized academic credentials that can strengthen university applications and, depending on the university, may lead to advanced placement or university credit.
Language and Culture
Learning a language is about much more than vocabulary and grammar.
Our international setting provides an ideal environment for students to understand language through culture. French and Spanish courses expose students to the histories, traditions, perspectives, literature, and contemporary experiences of communities across the world where these languages are spoken.
Through authentic communication and cultural exploration, students develop not only greater language proficiency but also curiosity, confidence, and intercultural understanding.
